My Stress and Fatigue Tests

To get the full picture of your stress and fatigue status we highly recommend one or other of the following laboratory tests. While the stress and fatigue profile brings to your attention the myriad effects of excessive stress and fatigue, the following laboratory tests reveal the underlying factors which may be a contributory factor in any stress-related symptoms you may be experiencing.

The big advantage of these tests is that they are non-invasive and simple to perform in your own home. Once you have completed the test you simply send it back to the laboratory ( IWDL Genova Diagnostics Europe www.iwdl.net ) and a full analysis will be returned to you as quickly as possible.

NB ONCE YOU HAVE PAID FOR AND RECEIVED YOUR TEST KIT, NO REFUNDS ARE AVAILABLE. YOU ARE THEN RESPONSIBLE FOR DELIVERING YOUR TEST KIT BACK TO THE LABORATORY WITH YOUR TEST SAMPLES.

The Adrenal Stress Index

What is adrenal stress?
The adrenal glands are known as the anti-stress glands of the body, often being described as a reserve tank which supports the body and mind during difficult times. No bigger than a walnut and weighing less than a grape, don't let their size fool you. The adrenals secrete an array of hormones that have a powerful influence over your physical, mental and emotional attributes and well-being. However, due to the tremendous stresses that we put ourselves under, psychological as well as physical, the adrenals take a beating and overtime their output becomes depleted. Cost £75.

Symptoms associated with adrenal stress are :

  • decreased mental and physical energy
  • poor immune system  (frequent colds/infections)
  • low mood
  • emotional instability
  • menstrual difficulties/irregularities
  • cravings
  • lowered sex drive
  • insomnia
  • headaches
  • anxiety
  • for the full list of adrenal symptoms please refer to the stress and fatigue profile

Male Hormone Profile

The Male Hormone Profile is an accurate, convenient, non-invasive saliva assay that evaluates testosterone activity in men. It also includes an analysis of the stress hormones (cortisol and DHEA) and melatonin, providing a more complete picture of how theses hormones may also be playing a role in testosterone imbalances. Optimal health is often dependant on the balance of these hormones, not just a single hormone.

About Testosterone

Testosterone is the major anabolic hormone with levels peaking around the age of 20 years, and declining steadily thereafter. It is produced by the testes and adrenal glands. Production in the testes is sensitive to stress, smoking, environmental toxins, oestrogen and nutritional deficiencies. The increase in these factors has resulted in a growing incidence of male infertility, a doubling of testicular cancer and a decrease in male sexual function.

Signs and Symptoms of Testosterone Imbalance

  • Lowered libido
  • Fatigue and irritability
  • Night sweats and mental burnout
  • Weight gain
  • Diminished facial/ body hair
  • Gynecomastia
  • Decreased muscle mass
  • Erectile dysfunction
  • Loss of bone density
  • Cardiovascular disease
  • Insulin resistance

About Melatonin

The hormone melatonin is a major modulator of annual and circadian biorhythms in the body, and has a far-reaching biological influence over most of the autonomic, hormonal and behavioural functions of the human body.

Melatonin's diurnal rhythm is synchronised by the light dark cycle and is strongly affected by day length, artificial lighting, electromagnetic energy and exercise. The longer the length of night the longer the duration of melatonin secretion. The exposure of light to the retina alters the amount of serotonin metabolised to melatonin, thus exposure to sufficient levels of light at night can rapidly reduce melatonin production.

Conditions Associated With Abnormal Melatonin Production

  • Abnormal sexual development
  • Cardiovascular disease
  • Cancer
  • Delayed sleep phase syndrome
  • Depression - high levels
  • Headaches (tension and cluster)
  • Insomnia
  • Jet lag
  • Premature ageing
  • Seasonal Affective Disorder
  • Stress

Female Hormone Panel

The menstrual cycle represents a woman's reproductive life, beginning with puberty and ending with the cessation of periods at menopause. Unfortunately many factors can influence this delicate balance of hormones, including stress, hormone imbalances, nutritional deficiencies and toxins.

Today problems with the menstrual cycle and fertility are among the most common complaints seen by doctors. PMS is estimated to affect 70-90% of women and 25% of couples may have problems conceiving a child due in part to these menstrual abnormalities.

Symptoms of hormone imbalances:

  • Loss of libido
  • Migraines / headaches
  • Hot flushes
  • Weight gain
  • Heavy bleeding
  • Water retention
  • Breast swelling / tenderness
  • Bloating
  • Mood swings
  • Fatigue
  • Cancer
  • Ovarian cysts
  • Fibroids
  • PCOS
  • Cellulite
  • Endometriosis
  • Irregular periods
  • PMS
  • Low libido
  • Painful periods
  • Osteoporosis
  • Depression

What is Measured ?

The Female Hormone Panel is a saliva assay that analyses levels of progesterone and oestrogen over 28 days (or an extended cycle), by sampling twelve times through the cycle. The relative levels of these two hormones can then be plotted and graphically to represent any abnormalities throughout the menstrual cycle. This test also measures testosterone which can be elevated in woman, e.g. in those with PCOS.

Why use Saliva?

The female hormone screen is a safe, non-invasive saliva assay which, unlike blood, measures the free and therefore bioavailable hormone levels. It is possible to have a normal total amount of a hormone in blood tests, but this may be 'bound' and unavailable to exert its effect on tissue. Analysis by blood also only provides a "snap shot" of the hormone status and not adequately reflecting the subtle changes happening over the whole menstrual cycle.
